Elipson

Founded in 1938, Elipson is the oldest speaker brand in France, still built around the spherical acoustic principle that made its name. Absolute Sound is the distributor for Elipson in Singapore and Malaysia.

A sphere, not a box

Elipson’s signature shape is not a design flourish: in its early years the company patented an ellipsoidal reflector specifically to reduce standing waves inside the cabinet, and the round Planet range still runs on that same principle today. The brand was revived in 2008 under new ownership, continuing that acoustic lineage rather than starting over, with the Legacy range built in France and other ranges engineered there to the same standard.

Questions about Elipson

Why are Elipson's speakers often spherical?

The shape is a deliberate acoustic choice, not a design flourish. Elipson patented an ellipsoidal reflector in its early years specifically to reduce standing waves inside the cabinet, and the round Planet range still runs on that same coaxial-driver principle today.

Is this the same Elipson that made speakers in the 1960s?

It is the same name and the same acoustic thinking, under different ownership. Elipson was founded in 1938 (as Multimoteur, renamed in 1951) and became a fixture of French hi-fi through the 1960s and 70s. The brand was revived in 2008 under new ownership, continuing that design lineage rather than starting fresh.

Can the Planet speakers work as a home cinema system, or are they stereo only?

Both. The spherical Planet design started as a stereo pair, but Elipson also configures it as a complete home cinema system, with satellites small enough to wall- or ceiling-mount around a room rather than sit as visible floor speakers.

Is Elipson still made in France?

The Legacy range is built in France, continuing the brand’s original manufacturing base. Elipson remains a French company and designs every range there; final assembly varies by model.
