Neat Acoustics

Neat Acoustics builds loudspeakers by hand in Teesdale, in the north of England. Absolute Sound is the distributor for Neat Acoustics in Singapore.

A musician’s ear, not a formula

Bob Surgeoner started Neat as a working musician, not an engineer, and that background still shapes how the company builds speakers. His first design, the Petite, appeared in 1989 and surprised listeners with how much scale and weight it produced from a small enclosure, a trait that carried the company into full-time production by 1993 and that the current range still trades on. Every model is developed the same way: a prototype is built, played against real recordings, adjusted, and played again, with measurements used only to confirm what the ear has already decided. The result is a small catalogue built slowly, not a line refreshed on a schedule.

Common questions about Neat Acoustics

Why does Neat Acoustics tune every speaker by ear rather than to a set of measurements?

Founder Bob Surgeoner is a musician rather than an engineer, and Neat’s speakers are developed by listening to real recordings and adjusting the design until it sounds right, with measurements used afterwards to confirm the result rather than to set the target. The company has held to this method since the first Petite in 1989.

Are Neat Acoustics speakers still handmade in England?

Yes. Every Neat loudspeaker is built by hand at the company’s base in Teesdale, in the north of England, by the team that has run the brand since it became a full-time manufacturer in 1993.

How does a small cabinet like the Iota produce such a full sound?

It is the problem Neat was founded to solve. The original 1989 Petite was designed to give a big, room-filling sound from a small standmount, and that same approach, cabinet and driver tuned together rather than to a spec target, carries through the compact Iota range today.

What is the difference between the Classic and Iota ranges?

Classic is the heritage line, directly descended from the original Petite design. Iota is Neat’s current compact standmount range, developed on its own rather than as an update of Classic. Strata and Momentum sit above both as the larger standmount and floorstanding models in the catalogue.
