Cables and accessories

Chord Company

Chord Company has designed and built interconnects, speaker cable and power leads from its Wiltshire workshop since 1985, treating cable as a working part of a system rather than an afterthought. Absolute Sound is the distributor for Chord Company in Singapore and Malaysia.

Forty years of cable design

The company began in 1985, when American retailers visiting Naim Audio in Salisbury asked for a proper interconnect and were told to make one themselves. Sally Gibb did, and the name followed from how the Americans said the word: cords, not cables. The Chord Company moved to its present site near Stonehenge in Wiltshire in 2004, where cable is still designed and built rather than bought in. Its ARAY conductor technology runs through the range, from an entry-level interconnect to the flagship ChordMusic line, and the business now extends into network conditioning under its revived English Electric name, a second front against noise rather than signal alone.

Common questions about Chord Company

Is Chord Company the same company as Chord Electronics?

No. Chord Company, founded in Wiltshire in 1985, designs and builds cables: interconnects, speaker cable, power leads and network products. Chord Electronics is a separate British company that makes amplifiers, DACs and streamers. The two are easily confused because of the shared name, but they have different founders, different factories and no corporate relationship.

Where does the name Chord Company come from?

American retailers visiting Naim Audio in Salisbury in 1985 asked for a proper interconnect and were told to make it themselves. Since the Americans called cables “cords,” the name Chord Company followed, with its musical pun intended from the start.

What is English Electric, and why does a cable company sell it?

English Electric is a heritage British engineering name that Chord Company revived for its network switches and mains-conditioning products, built for streaming systems. It sits alongside the cable range rather than replacing it: Chord Company builds both signal cable and the products that keep noise off it.

Is Chord Company still run by its founder?

Yes. Sally Gibb, who built the company’s first cable in 1985, remains its chief executive, with her husband Alan Gibb as managing director. It is still independently and privately held, run from the same Wiltshire site the company moved to in 2004.
