Stenheim

Founded in Switzerland in 2010, Stenheim builds every enclosure from aluminium rather than wood, engineered for output most designs need a horn to reach. Absolute Sound is the distributor for Stenheim in Singapore and Malaysia.

Aluminium, not wood

Five audio engineers founded Stenheim in the Swiss canton of Valais, working from the belief that an inert cabinet lets the driver do the work without adding a colour of its own. The company’s first speaker, the Alumine Two, appeared in 2011; the range grew from there under Jean-Pascal Panchard, who took over its direction in 2013. Every speaker is still hand-assembled in Vétroz, where the company began.

Questions about Stenheim

Why aluminium instead of wood for the cabinet?

Wood and MDF cabinets always resonate to some degree, adding a colouration of their own. Stenheim machines every enclosure from aluminium instead, on the reasoning that an inert cabinet gets out of the way of the driver rather than shaping the sound alongside it.

How does Stenheim reach such high efficiency without using a horn?

Rather than loading the sound through a horn, Stenheim pairs its aluminium cabinets with custom-made, high-efficiency drivers and a sophisticated crossover, reaching an output level that most conventional dynamic-driver speakers only manage with a horn attached.

Where are Stenheim speakers made?

In Vétroz, in the Swiss canton of Valais, where the company was founded in 2010. Every speaker is still hand-assembled there by the same team, rather than at a contracted third-party factory.

Do Stenheim speakers suit lower-powered amplifiers?

Their high efficiency means they need less power to reach a given volume than most conventional speakers, which makes them a natural match for lower-powered amplifiers, including many tube designs, rather than requiring a large solid-state amplifier to sound their best.
